Recent avalanches: The last observed avalanches in the Seward area occurred about two weeks ago during the last large storm that finished January 17.
A large amount of weight was added to the snowpack in Seward over the last 24 hours (1.5" of water or 12 to 18" of new snow above 2,000') and rapid loading is still occurring with strong easterly winds in the alpine. There are good chances a person could trigger a very large avalanche on the layer of weak snow buried up to 5' deep. Triggering an avalanche this large could have serious consequences.
It is very important today to stay out from underneath steep slopes. Due to the nature of this unusual weak layer, a very large avalanche could be triggered from below. If one of these avalanches is triggered, debris could run to valley bottoms. Even small features could be problematic, so avoid any slope that ends in a gully feature where the snow could pile up.
