Highlights

Today's sunshine and warming temperatures will be increasing the general avalanche hazard. Loose snow sloughs are likely on steep sunlit slopes. The warm up is expected to increase the sensitivity of recently formed wind slabs and deep persistent slabs to human triggers. Monitor conditions for increasing hazard. Conservative terrain choices are warranted during this transition from a cold to a warm regime. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

    The recent new snow has increased the load on deeply buried weak layers of faceted snow. These weak layers will be struggling to adjust to that load and snow creep that will be occurring on steep slopes as temperatures increase. Deep hard slab avalanches with depths to five feet could still be triggered by humans. These low probability/high consequence avalanches are more likely to be triggered where faceted snow from December resides less than three feet below the snow surface. Large triggers, such as snowmobiles or cornice failures, are more likely to trigger one of these dangerous hard slab avalanches.

    Soft slab avalanches up to two feet in depth could be triggered by skiers and riders who venture into steep avalanche starting zones, cliff areas and steep couloirs. The likelihood of triggered these surface slabs will increase during the warmest portion of the day.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snow showers are likely overnight and could bring 1 to 3 inches of new snow to the higher elevations. Skies will become mostly sunny on Tuesday under a building high pressure ridge. Temperatures will rise into the 20s from overnight lows in the single digits. Winds will be light from the west to west-southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour.Tomorrow’s sunshine and warming temperatures will impact the new snow that fell during the last several days. That sunshine and warming will increase the potential for loose snow avalanches on steep sunlit aspects and for wind slab avalanches to be human triggered or release naturally. Persistent deep slab avalanches with depths to five feet are also a potential hazard as deeply buried weak layers will be struggling to adjust to the recent load and snow creep that will be occurring on steep slopes during this warm up event. The general avalanche hazard is expected to increase to CONSIDERABLE in the mountains of western Wyoming.
