Highlights

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective until 5 AM on Monday. New snow and strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will form small to large wind slabs in leeward terrain above 7,500 feet. As the day progresses, the chance for skiers and riders to trigger these slabs in steep, wind-loaded avalanche terrain will be on an increasing trend. Monitor weather conditions, and utilize an increasingly conservative approach to terrain selection throughout the day. If an extended period of rapid loading occurs, be willing to back off and move to low consequence terrain. The sparse to nonexistent snowpack below 7,500 feet is mostly stable.

    Several inches of dry snow sit upon crusts formed in late November. In many areas, these crusts are several inches thick. In some high elevation, mostly shaded terrain, a couple of crusts can surround small grains of faceted snow. As new wind slabs build, backcountry travelers will become increasingly likely to trigger these newly developed slabs. By this evening, these slabs could reach depths of 12 to 18 inches.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective from midnight on Saturday through 5 AM Monday morning. A Pacific low pressure system will begin to impact the region Saturday night and continue through the day on Sunday. Strong southwesterly ridgetop winds at 20 to 30 miles per hour will accompany this snowfall. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the low 20s before rising a few degrees during the day.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW Sunday morning and steadily increase as new snow and strong southwesterly ridgetop winds form new wind slabs. As the day progresses, the avalanche hazard will increase to MODERATE, and an extended period of rapid loading could significantly increase the hazard. Skiers and riders will become increasingly likely to trigger these newly developed slabs failing on the late November crusts or faceted snow near and above the crusts. Monitor weather conditions, and utilize an increasingly conservative approach to terrain selection throughout the day.
