Highlights

We don't expect the increase in gusty, easterly winds on Tuesday to significantly impact avalanche hazard. That said, given our uncertainty regarding the weak, complex snowpack, there is an off-chance of increasing reactivity for avalanches on weak snow layers or small wind-drifted slabs. Back off steep terrain if you observe any signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing.

Tuesday will be an extremely cold day, with wind chill values below zero. Make sure to pack extra layers and some hand warmers. It is also worth considering the consequences of a minor injury or equipment malfunction stranding you overnight in the mountains. A simple issue could quickly turn life-threatening. Thankfully, the sunshine will help moderate the frigid temperatures just slightly. 

The weak facets and surface hoar associated with the January Drought Layer (JDL) haven't left our minds. However, with the lack of avalanche activity and inconsistent stability test results, we have enough confidence to say we don't expect this to be a current problem. However, we have pretty high confidence this problem will return to haunt us once more with additional snowfall. Also, if you are traveling near the zone boundary or areas where we typically have less information, read the adjacent zone's forecast and step into new terrain slowly, assessing the snowpack for strong over weak layering before committing to steep terrain. Choose lower angle slopes if you find a stiffer slab over weak, surgery snow or experience collapsing/cracking. 

Recent snow totals are between 2-3ft over the past 10 days. Some sunny days produced small wet and dry loose avalanches and formed a melt-freeze crust on southerly slopes. While many tests and observations show a lack of slab cohesion, we are still closely monitoring the January Drought Layer (JDL) on northerly aspects. The last whumping collapse occurred on Feb. 5th. While the overlaying slab has settled, we haven't seen an increase in avalanche activity or unstable stability test results.  Stevens Pass might not have had many observations of Persistent Slab avalanches in this zone, but there have been plenty elsewhere. Locally, observers have reported a "scary" snowpack structure. It's now waiting for the right load to become more active.
