Skiers and riders could trigger small fresh wind slabs today on upper elevation east aspects. Over the last 24 hours, 2 to 3 inches of new snow and moderate to strong west winds built small fresh wind slabs on leeward aspects. Today, another 3 to 5 inches of snow combined with light to moderate northwest winds will continue building these slabs.
Wind slabs appear smooth and rounded and are often found just below ridges and in cross-loaded gullies. Cornices, wind lips, and drifts all indicate wind direction and loading. Signs of instability like shooting cracks warn you to stay off steep slopes. The best way to mitigate this problem is to avoid wind-loaded slopes over 35º.
