Highlights

Overall, the snowpack is deep and stable and large avalanches unlikely. That said, Mother Nature is cranking the north wind knob. Areas of drifted snow may exist in upper elevation terrain where recent winds formed shallow slabs. In addition, ice chunks will begin to flake off rime plastered rocks on these warm days. Be heads up. Other hazards include cornices along ridges, deep tree wells and large tree bombs.

    Yesterday, north-northwest wind picked up considerably at noon. Wind speeds averaged 23 mi/hr with gusts to over 100 mi/hr near treeline. Gale force wind speeds are expected to persist today. Look for small wind slabs in isolated areas above treeline. Strong wind may be able to affect near treeline terrain too, where loose powder snow remains available for transport. Large cornices exist in many areas along ridges. Wind slab instability usually heals fairly quickly, but people still might be able to trigger a slab avalanche or cornice fall in steep, drifted terrain.

What a weekend! A HUGE thank you to each one of you that came out to the Shasta Ascension Backcountry Ski Race and Snow Ball event yesterday. The community support is stronger than ever, and we can't thank you enough. A slew of volunteers makes this happen. The outpouring of camaraderie is above and beyond. Siskiyou County is working to clear the roads ASAP.
