What and where is it: Overnight snowfall of just over 2 inches, with another 2-6 inches possible today, and shifting winds will form wind slabs on north, east, and south-facing slopes above 3000 feet. The largest slabs will be on east and southeast aspects, where they may be large enough to bury a person. If snowfall reaches the higher end of expected totals, slabs may become more sensitive and could slide naturally later today as west winds increase and continue loading these slopes.
How can you recognize it: Look for areas of smooth, pillowy snow that indicate recent drifting. As you move through terrain, use your pole or boot penetration to assess the thickness of these slabs. Digging with your hand, pole, or shovel can help you see how well the new snow is adhered to the icy bed surface, as poor bonding could allow the slab to slide easily. Pay attention to snowfall rates and wind speeds throughout the day to assess whether wind slabs are growing larger and becoming more reactive.
How can you manage it: If slabs are small and well bonded to the icy bed surface, they may be relatively easy to manage. However, if slabs grow larger or show poor bonding, favor travel on firm surfaces or thinner drifts to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche. Consider the timing of your travel in avalanche terrain, what’s manageable this morning may become more problematic this afternoon. Pay close attention to changing conditions.
