Regions

Northwest Inland, Howson, Microwave-Sinclair, North Bulkley, South Bulkley, Telkwa.

A bit of new snow has improved travel conditions, but wind slab formation is still minimal. Change is coming!

Confidence

High

  • The snowpack structure is well understood.

Avalanche Summary

No new or even recent avalanches have been reported in the region and forecast weather doesn't promise much change for Thursday.

Snowpack Summary

Incremental recent accumulations of about 10 cm have slightly improved travel conditions in shelter, but exposed alpine remains heavily wind-affected. Below approximately 1600 m, the now-buried crust is up to 20 cm thick. It extends as high as 2300 m. Large surface hoar can be found on the crust at treeline and below treeline.

A layer of facets is buried around 50 to 100 cm deep, for the most part locked under the supportive crust.

The mid and lower snowpack have no layers of concern. Snowpack depths are around 150-200 cm at treeline.

Weather Summary

Friday
Becoming partly cloudy after overnight snowfall delivers 10 to 20 cm of new snow. 60 to 80 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature reaching 1 °C with freezing level to 1700 m.

Saturday

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avalanche activity is unlikely when a thick melt-freeze crust is present on the snow surface.
