Snowpack Summary

30cm of recent snow has fallen and been moved around by winds creating pockets of snow along ridgelines and gullies that is up to 50cm deep. Windslabs should be expected in the upper elevations.

Most snowpack observations are made from weather stations and observations from the valley floor at this time of year so we have low confidence in snowpack structure. We are confident though that in many areas at treeline and above, the snowpack has reached a threshold depth for avalanches to occur so keep this potential on your mind.

Weather Summary

Light snow will continue to fall over the next few days days before the cooler temperatures more out of the region.

Winds are highly variable and we expect wind transport to continue at the upper elevations.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
