Expect wind scouring and wind slabs in exposed terrain. Reports of good riding conditions still exist in sheltered areas.
High-Pressure, clear skies, cool temperatures, and light Northerly winds are forecasted today. Alpine temperatures will reach -10c today, and will fall back to near -15 overnight. This weather pattern is forecasted to continue until at least next week!
Previous strong to extreme southerly winds has had widespread wind effect in the Alpine and at Tree Line. In sheltered locations one can find low-density storm snow on the surface; however wind scouring and hard slabs are the norm in many locations at and above TL. The Jan 10 layer is down 40-60cm in sheltered terrain at tree-line and below.
Only 2 new avalanches were observed in the Highway Corridor yesterday. They occurred during the overnight period on Tuesday evening during the significant wind event, where values on MacDonald West Shoulder reached over 140 km/h! One size 1 skier controlled wind slab avalanche was reported on Little Sifton yesterday.
