Regions

Spray - KLakes.

Still early season conditions out there. In many places, rocks and trees are just below the surface. Ski/ride with care.

Confidence

Moderate

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches

Snowpack Summary

We have early season conditions with variable snow distribution. At valley bottom along the Spray road, we have about 40cm of snow and in the alpine we have about 65cm of snow. Good old Wind has moved the white stuff around, so expect deeper areas in lee features and around gullies. Wind slabs are present in some open areas. Ice climbers should be aware of loose dry snow above them.

Weather Summary

Thursday will start off cold and warm up to -9c with mostly sunny skies. Winds expected to be moderate from the SW. Clear and warmer for the weekend coming up with no new snow.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Approach lee and cross-loaded slopes with caution.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
