Regions

Kootenay Boundary, Purcells, Bonnington, Grohman, Kootenay Pass, Norns, Ymir, Crawford, Moyie, Kokanee, Retallack, Valhalla, Whatshan.

Wind slabs are most likely near ridge crests, steep rollovers, and cross-loaded features.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to how quickly the snowpack will recover and gain strength.

Avalanche Summary

A few storm and wind slab avalanches have been reported over the past couple of days, both natural and rider-triggered. These avalanches ranged from size 1 to 2 and occurred primarily on northerly aspects at treeline and above.

While the likelihood of natural avalanches is expected to continue to decrease, rider-triggered avalanches will remain possible.

Snowpack Summary

At upper elevations, variable winds have redistributed recent storm snow into deeper deposits in exposed terrain.

Below approximately 2100 m, 20 to 40 cm of recent storm snow sits atop a rain crust buried on December 24.

The mid and lower snowpack is generally well-bonded and consolidated, with multiple crusts present.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be careful with wind-loaded pockets, especially near ridge crests and rollovers.
  • Recent wind has varied in direction, so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.
  • Seek out sheltered terrain where new snow hasn't been affected by wind.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
