Highlights

The avalanche danger is linked to a weak layer of faceted crystals deep in the snowpack. In many areas, this layer is well protected beneath hard wind-packed snow and is therefore likely difficult to trigger. However, avalanches that release on this layer can become large, as it still has good propagation potential and there is a substantial amount of wind-deposited snow above. Where the snowpack is thin, the faceted layer may be easier to trigger.

In the easternmost parts of the region, pockets of fresh wind-drifted snow from Wednesday may still be unstable today.

Be aware that cornice breaks or avalanches in the wind-drifted snow can place significant additional load on the snowpack and may trigger avalanches in deeper layers.

Tendency

Strong winds and some new snow may form fresh wind slabs in northwest‑facing slopes, and some avalanches may release naturally. There is also a deep layer of faceted snow that can produce large avalanches where the snowpack is thin or receives additional loading, for example from cornice falls or avalanches in the wind slabs
