Snowpack

In near-surface layers, there are sometimes weak layers in which avalanches could be triggered. In addition, the Bise wind in the Jura and the Prealps and the strong northerly wind in the south have led to the formation of snowdrift accumulations.

On the central part of the southern flank of the Alps and in southern Upper Engadine, the old snowpack structure has been partially transformed, especially in places with little snow, and fractures deeper in the snowpack are possible in isolated cases. In the other regions, the old snowpack structure is generally favourable. Hardly any fractures deeper in the snowpack are to be expected there.

Individual medium-sized and, rarely, large gliding avalanches are still to be expected, especially at altitudes between 2000 and 2500 m.

Weather forecast for Tuesday, 09.01.2024

It will be partly sunny in the Engadine and the high Alpine regions, otherwise very cloudy. In the south, a little snow will fall to low altitudes.

New snow

In the south, there will be up to 5 cm of fresh snow above approximately 800 m.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -4 °C in the north and -7 °C in the south.

Wind

The Bise wind will remain moderate during the night; otherwise winds will be weak.

Weather review for Monday, 08.01.2024

It was mostly cloudy, and snow fell at times even in the lowlands. On the eastern part of the northern flank of the Alps and in Grisons, it became quite sunny above approximately 1800 m as the day progressed.

New snow

From Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow were recorded above 1000 m:

• central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps: 10 to 20 cm;
• elsewhere: locally up to 15 cm, but usually less.

This means that the following amounts have fallen above 1500 m since Friday afternoon:

• central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps, parts of central Grisons, Upper Engadine, Moesano: 40 to 60 cm;
• elsewhere: widely 20 to 40 cm; less in the western Jura and in parts of Upper Valais.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -8 °C in the north and -3 °C in the south.

Wind

• There was a moderate Bise wind in the Prealps and the Jura, strong at times during the night.
• In the south, there was a moderate to strong northerly wind during the night.
• Elsewhere, winds were light to moderate, shifting from northeast to southeast.

Trend until Thursday, 11.01.2024

During Tuesday night into Wednesday, up to 5 cm of snow will fall widely to low altitudes. On Wednesday, it will be partly sunny in Valais, as well as above 1500 m in the north and in Grisons. Thursday will be sunny in the mountains. The wind will be light on both days.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Individual gliding avalanches, mostly of medium size, will still be possible.
