A major storm is expected to hit the region over the next few days. Heavy snowfall and strong winds will spike the avalanche hazard. Be extremely cautious in avalanche terrain.

Weather Forecast

A major weather event is approaching that could bring 70cm or more over the next couple of days. Winds will be strong from the SW and temperatures will be mild on Thursday, but falling Friday.

Nothing new observed, but observations were extremely limited.

Snowpack Summary

An additional 5 to 10cm of new snow fell through the day, but a significant storm is approaching. The November rain crust is found about 20 to 30cm off the ground and will be a layer to be aware of. Storm slab development is ongoing and will also be a significant concern over the next several days.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.

Loose Dry

Loose Dry avalanches are the release of dry unconsolidated snow and typically occur within layers of soft snow near the surface of the snowpack. These avalanches start at a point and entrain snow as they move downhill, forming a fan-shaped avalanche. Other names for loose-dry avalanches include point-release avalanches or sluffs.
