Snowpack

Below 2800 m, the snow of the past week fell widely on bare ground or on north-facing slopes at higher altitudes, partly on a thin old snowpack of angular crystals. Because this thin layer of old snow has not yet filled in the roughness of the terrain, hardly any widespread avalanches are expected. The avalanche danger is therefore mainly due to the fresh and older wind slabs.

Above approximately 2800 metres, on the other hand, the snow fell mainly on northern slopes on an often contiguous old snowpack. Where the old snowpack meets last week’s snow, there is a weak layer of angular crystals in places. Occasionally, avalanches can be released in this layer.

With the mild temperatures and the foehn wind, the snowpack was moistened to intermediate altitudes and on sunny slopes up to high altitudes.

It will be mostly sunny in the north before clouds move in from the west in the afternoon. It will be overcast in the south.

OutlookTuesday

During the night to Tuesday there will be widespread snowfall, about 20 cm in the far west. The snowfall level will drop from around 2400 m to 1600 m from the west. In the south, it will remain at 1800 metres. During the day it will be partly sunny in the west and south, otherwise it will be very cloudy. On Monday evening in the west, the wind will still be strong to stormy from the southwest. It will decrease appreciably during the night.

The danger of dry avalanches may increase slightly in some regions with the new snow. Due to falling temperatures, the danger of wet avalanches will decrease appreciably.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, it will be quite sunny. The wind will be light to moderate from the southwest. The temperature in the middle of the day at 2000 m will be +2 °C.

The avalanche danger will decrease.
