Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 5 to 20 cm of snow has fallen since the early morning above approximately 2000 m. The rain gave rise on Thursday to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 1900 m. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 1800 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. The snowpack is not distinctly layered. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist. In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind.

Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a strong wind, further wind slabs will form in the course of the day in particular in places that are protected from the wind. In particular on wind-loaded slopes the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack on shady slopes. They can be released. In particular in the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable) the avalanche prone locations are more widespread. In particular extremely steep slopes and base of rock walls: As a consequence of the new snow small to medium-sized loose snow avalanches are possible. In particular on shady slopes these can be released in the faceted old snow.
