Snowpack

With snowfall and sometimes moderate wind, small snowdrifts formed on Tuesday, particularly on the northern flank of the Alps and in the extreme west of Lower Valais, adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. These were deposited especially on shady slopes that are protected from the wind on a loose, partially transformed surface of the snowpack. Apart from that, the snowpack, which is still thin in many places, is mostly favourable with only isolated weak layers.

Above 2800 m, where there was already a cohesive old snowpack before the precipitation in the second half of November, there are some weak layers of faceted crystals on northern slopes. Avalanches can be released in the old snowpack near the ground in very isolated cases.

It will be mostly sunny in Valais and the south. Otherwise, it will be cloudy at first and a few snowflakes will fall down to low altitudes in the northeast. As the day progresses, it will become increasingly sunny in the west and generally above 2500 to 3000 m.

It was very cloudy with precipitation, especially in the north. The snowfall level dropped from 2000 m to 1000 m.

Fresh snow

From Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow fell above approximately 2000 m:

• Northern flank of the Alps: 10 to 20 cm
• Otherwise a few centimetres over a wide area; dry in the south

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -5 °C in the north and +1 °C in the south.

Wind

Moderate at times at high altitudes, otherwise mostly weak, turning from southwest to northwest

OutlookThursday

In the early morning it will be sunny, then clouds will gather from the west. Moderate northerly winds will blow at high altitudes, with some strong northerly winds along the Main Alpine Ridge.

Avalanche danger will decrease.

Friday

It will be very cloudy with precipitation. In the north and far west, the snowfall level will temporarily rise to around 1800 m. Above that, around 20 to 40 cm of new snow is expected. The wind will be strong to stormy from the west, later from the northwest. In the far south, it will be partly sunny with foehn winds.

The avalanche danger will increase widely, in the west and north probably to danger level 3 (considerable).
