Mount Shasta

Avalanche danger is LOW.

Expect increasing danger this weekend as a robust storm brings multiple feet of snow, wind and cold temperatures to the area. 

The only substantial snowpack in the forecast area exists above 8,000 ft on Mount Shasta. If heading up, expect cold temperatures, northwesterly wind, and firm conditions. Many hard obstacles exist.

With multiple feet of snow, wind and cold temps in the forecast, the avalanche danger will increase. Today and tomorrow are the days to really take a look at the existing snowpack on the mountain. Not only will these be the best places to soon recreate, they'll also be the best places for potential avalanches.  Steep slopes along Casaval and Green Butte ridges and the west/northwest side of Gray Butte are slopes where the best chance of triggering an avalanche will be. Other zones within the forecast area are still devoid of snow, and this storm will get us going for the winter. Let the games begin.

A reminder that the Siskiyou County road crew, during large storms, will often close the gate at McBride Springs along the Everitt Memorial Highway. This may be the case this weekend. Our companion rescue clinic will be redirected to the Sisson Elementary baseball field if the gate is close on Sunday.
