SC 19/02 Unstable windslab in many locations. Deepest on NE through E to SE above 800m. Fragile Cornices! Aval. Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Redistribution of existing deposits will continue to form unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations on mainly North-East through East to South aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices will develop on these aspects. Moderately bonded windslab will be encountered below this altitude and also on South-West through West to North aspects above 800 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Isolated light snow showers to glen level overnight, dry throughout the day. Freezing level rising from 300 metres in the morning to 500 metres by mid afternoon. Strong North-North-Westerly winds backing Westerly overnight, easing and backing to moderate South-South-Westerly by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Persistent snowfall throughout the day to glen level, heaviest during the morning. Variable winds, strong Easterly during the morning, storm force Northerly during the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh accumulations of localised windslab have formed on most aspects above 600 metres. Deepest accumulations are present in wind sheltered locations on North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Distribution and depth is now increasing on South and South-West aspects above 800 metres. Shallower pockets have formed on West to North aspects at this same altitude. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
