Low avalanche danger, watch out for wet snow.

The avalanche risk is low. In the event of rain or prolonged exposure to sunlight, the triggering of wet avalanches increases slightly. This is particularly the case where there is still a lot of snow, i.e. mainly on very steep shady slopes at high altitudes and in some cases on eastern and western slopes. The avalanches usually remain small, but can tear through to the ground in wet snow and occasionally reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack can only outgoing longwave radiation poorly overnight. No or only a very thin melt-freeze crust forms, which softens quickly in the morning. The snowpack underneath consists of compact snow characterised by rain. On shady slopes from around 2400 metres, there are weak layers of deep rime in the old snowpack close to the ground. The snowpack, if still present at all, is moist to wet up to high altitudes.

Weather Forecast

In the evening, unproductive showers mix in on the main Alpine ridge and in the Nockberge mountains, the snowfall level is around 2500 metres. Dry weather will soon prevail here too. The rest of the night will often be cloudy in the central Alps, with less cloud further north. On Wednesday, there will still be some residual clouds at the beginning, but visibility will hardly be restricted except for the highest regions of the Tauern. There will be more sunshine from the Chiemgau Alps to the Osterhorn group right from the start. From the north, the sun will increasingly prevail during the day. Only along the main Alpine ridge and in Lungau will there be more clouds with light, localised showers (snowfall level around 2300 m). The wind will blow weakly to moderately from north to east, sometimes briskly in the Osterhorn group. At 2000 m around +3 degrees, at 3000 m around -4 degrees.

Tendency

The risk of avalanches continues to decrease as the glacier thins out.
