Avalanche Activity

Weak layers in the old snowpack can still be released in isolated cases.

As a consequence of the occasionally moderate westerly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations will form on Monday. Dry avalanches can be released by small loads. In particular transitions into gullies and bowls where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable, caution is to be exercised on very steep slopes, and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are sometimes covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. In some places avalanches can penetrate down to the ground. Individual mostly small natural avalanches are possible, in particular on extreme slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 5 to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Saturday above approximately 2000 m. On Monday the wind will be moderate at times in some localities. Towards its surface, the snowpack is soft and has a loosely bonded surface. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. Steep sunny slopes: Underneath the fresh snow there is a more or less load-bearing refreezing crust. Snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2400 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitude a little snow is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes less snow than usual is lying.
