Avalanche Activity

Fresh and older wind slabs require caution. From the early morning as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong to storm force wind, easily released wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as at elevated altitudes. The wind slabs can be released easily or naturally in particular on north to east to southeast facing aspects and generally at high altitude. Avalanches can be released by a single winter sport participant. Additionally avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size in the regions with a lot of snow. As a consequence of warming, the likelihood of dry and wet avalanches being released will increase in all aspects.

Snowpack Structure

In the regions exposed to the foehn wind 10 to 20 cm of snow fell in the last three days above approximately 2200 m. The sometimes storm force wind has transported some snow. Fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in particular on north to east to south facing aspects. Individual weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack on shady slopes. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack.

Tendency

Significant warming. The surface of the snowpack will soften quickly. From late morning the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase.
