A lot of new snow in the high Alpine regions: Considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions.

Snowpack

A storm-strength southerly air current has brought a great deal of precipitation to the southern regions, however the precipitation fell as snow only above 2800 to 3000 m. By Saturday afternoon, additional but no more quite as heavy bouts of precipitation are expected to fall. The snowfall level will descend to approximately 2400 m. Prior to this round of precipitation there was a partially cohesive area-wide snowpack above approximately 3000 m on the glaciers in the Bernina region and on the northern flank of the Alps, in the Valais mostly only above approximately 3500 m.

Outlook through Monday, 23.10.2023

During the nocturnal hours on Saturday, a small amount of precipitation is anticipated in the eastern and in the southern regions, then on Monday another bout in the southern regions. Apart from this it is expected to be rather sunny on both days. The likelihood of dry-snow avalanches triggering is decreasing incrementally, nevertheless avalanches can still release and grow to dangerously large size in the major areas of precipitation. Glaciated steep terrain above approximately 3000 m should be evaluated with particularly great caution. As a consequence of solar radiation, increasingly frequent wet-snow avalanches can be expected on Sunday more than any other time. These releases can grow to dangerously large size in the major areas of precipitation. Furthermore, wherever snow fell on bare ground, gliding snowslides will be possible.
