Summary

Weather Forecast

An arctic ridge of high pressure develops over Alberta on Thursday. Cool temperatures, only light flurries and diminishing winds are expected. Cold temperatures will persist through the weekend.

Snowpack Summary

20-40 cm of snow, and strong wind from last few days have formed fresh wind and storm slabs. In most areas the mid and lower pack is well settled. Some areas have reports of buried surface hoar down 40-50 cm. It will be important to dig a pit to see if there is surface hoar in the region that you are skiing.

Avalanche Summary

No avalanches observed or reported in Little Yoho today.

Storm Slabs

An icon showing Storm Slabs

Recent snow and winds have created fresh storm and wind slabs in alpine and treeline regions. It will take several days before these instabilities start to settle out.

  • If triggered the storm slabs may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.
  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created storm slabs.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Expected Size

Deep Persistent Slabs

In areas where there is a weaker lower pack there is still some potential for avalanches to step down into these weaker areas.

  • Avoid shallow snowpack areas where triggering is more likely.
