You can trigger an avalanche which breaks deeply from places where the snow cover thins, such as convexities, rocky areas, or gully edges. You may trigger an avalanche in surface layers which breaks into deeper weak layers, creating a more dangerous slide. You can always avoid avalanches by sticking to slopes less than about thirty degrees steepness without steep terrain above.
