At the higher elevations limited potential persist in isolated areas for humans to trigger slab avalanches up to 18 inches in depth. Persistent weak layers of faceted snow within the snow pack are the concern with respect to the failure of these slabs. New snow will begin to accumulate on slick old snow surfaces in some avalanche starting zones. Monitor conditions and be wary of steep slopes if rapid loading associated with the new snowfall occurs.

The slow moving storm is currently centered near the Utah Nevada border and moving east. Although the storm is tracking to south of wyoming periods of snow are expected Wednesday night as moisture is pushed to north from the storms center. The chance of lingering snow showers will diminish throughout the day on Thursday. Temperatures on the summits will rise from the single digits to the mid teens while valleys warm to the upper twenties.The general avalanche hazard could rise to Moderate above 9000 feet on Thanksgiving day if a significant amount of snow falls by morning. This hazard is likely to present in areas where new surface slabs are formed by snow and wind over hard snow surfaces or weak faceted snow.
