As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. In particular intermediate and high altitudes as well as in places that are protected from the wind: Soft wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in areas close to the tree line. The wind slabs are clearly recognisable. In particular steep sunny slopes and base of rock walls: Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry and moist avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming.
Over a wide area 15 to 25 cm of snow fell on Thursday in all altitude zones. The strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow. In particular in the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Shady slopes: The snowpack is dry and has a loosely bonded surface. Sunny slopes: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2200 m.
Early morning: Slab avalanches are the main danger. On sunny slopes and in steep rocky terrain the likelihood of dry and wet avalanches will increase during the day.
