Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: New unstable windslab will develop, mainly on South-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. As freezing levels rise, deposits will become increasingly unstable with avalanches likely. Greatest hazard will be found on any steep terrain such as corrie rims, gully exits and scarp slopes. Cornices will be prone to collapse above these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will be around 600 metres overnight but will start to rise, forecasted to be around 1200 metres by early afternoon. Precipitation will initially fall as snow, turning to rain as the freezing level rises. Winds, initially South-South-East, veering to the West by the end of the day. Gale force during the day. Observed Weather Influences: A cloudy but dry day. The freezing level was slowly rising, to around 600 metres by mid afternoon. Winds, initially South-East but veering to the South by the end of the day. Gale force throughout. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab is found mainly on West to North aspects above 900 metres with newly formed cornices above these slopes. Greatest hazard is found in steep wind sheltered terrain such as corrie rims and gully exits. Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab is also found on South-West, North-East and East aspects and at lower elevations. Fragile cornices exist above these slopes. Wind exposed terrain is scoured and very icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
