Highlights

A change in wind direction causes the avalanche problem to shift to SW–NE facing slopes. Avalanches in wind-drifted snow may be easy to trigger, especially at higher elevations. Cornices are well-developed and may trigger avalanches if they break.

Locally, in sheltered pockets, there may be newly formed faceted crystals high in the snowpack, which can amplify the wind-drifted snow problem. This is caused by the meeting of dry and moist snow combined with clear weather. Wind-drifted snow slabs can then become more sensitive and easier to trigger.

Avalanche Activity

A change in wind direction causes the avalanche problem to shift to SW–NE facing slopes. Avalanches in wind-drifted snow may be easy to trigger, especially at higher elevations. Cornices are well-developed and may trigger avalanches if they break. Endring i vindretning fører til at skredproblemet flytter seg til SV-NØ heng. Det kan være lett å løse ut skred i fokksnøen, spesielt i høyden. Skavler er velutviklet og kan løse ut skred dersom de knekker.

Lokalt i skjerma lommer kan det være nyere kantkorndanning høyt i snødekket som kan forsterke fokksnøproblemet. Årsaken er møte mellom tørr og fuktig snø, og klarvær. Fokksnøflak kan da bli mer påvirkelig og lettere og løse ut.

Snowpack Structure

I lavlandet er snødekket fuktet opp til ca. 400 moh. Det har de siste dagene kommet rundt 10 cm nysnø, og spesielt i høyden er det observert vindtransport og opptil halvmeter med fokksnø i leheng. Fokksnøflakene varierer i hardhet, men det er gode muligheter for å finne løs snø. Det er forhold for kantkorndanning høyt i snødekket.

Tendency

Sun and high temperatures will melt the snow, and wet loose avalanches may release, and cornices may collapse.

Precipitation and wind have transported snow into leeward formations. The amount of precipitation has been limited, and the high temperatures will likely stabilize the wind-drifted snow quickly. At higher elevations, it will still be possible to trigger avalanches.

In sheltered formations, faceted crystals may have formed high in the snowpack, which could amplify the wind slab problem, but the extent of this is uncertain.
