Avalanche Activity

The sometimes new snow-covered wind slabs of the last few days remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering at intermediate and high altitudes, caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls on steep slopes. They are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. Avalanches can be released in near-surface layers, in particular by large additional loads. In addition an appreciable danger of moist and wet avalanches exists.

Snowpack Structure

The rain gave rise to increasing and thorough wetting of the snowpack over a wide area. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be severely restricted. The surface of the snowpack will freeze very little and will soften quickly. The high temperatures will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack. Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes.
