Small, freshly generated snowdrift masses from the weekend are still prone to triggering in isolated cases, can be released even by one single winter sports enthusiast. Avalanche prone locations are located particularly on shady slopes near ridgelines. The drifts increase in spread and in trigger-sensitivity with ascending altitude. Avalanches tend to remain small-sized. The danger of being swept along and forced to take a fall when there is a release in extremely steep terrain (>40°) outweighs the risk of being buried in snow masses. In addition, on extremely steep grassy slopes small, naturally triggered glide-snow avalanches are possible.
The small, fresh snowdrift masses of the last few days which were generated by southerly winds have consolidated for the most part, as a result of milder tempertures and diffuse solar radiation on Sunday. They are still prone to triggering only in isolated cases, particularly on shady slopes near ridgelines at high altitudes where snowdrift accumulations were deposited on top of a loose snowpack surface (faceted crystals, decomposed snow). For winter sports, there is still not enough snow. Ski tours in outlying terrain will meet up with rocks.
Monday: On Monday, visibility in the mountains will be limited right from early morning, a few snowflakes can also be expected in the Tauern and Lungau Nockberge. During the afternoon snowfall will set in from the southwest, the snowfall level will descend to below 1000 m by evening. By Monday night when the precipitation will terminate, 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow is anticipated over widespread areas, about 15 cm on the Main Alpine Ridge. Southerly winds on Monday will intially be brisk, then slacken off in the morning hours. At 2000 m, -2 to 0 degrees; at 3000 m: -7 degrees. Tuesday: In the morning, sunny weather will rapidly prevail. Visibility will be very good. During the afternoon, heavy cloud will move in from the northwest, visibility will deteriorate. At 2000 m, -5 to -3 degrees; at 3000 m: -9 degrees.
The now somewhat older snowdrift accumulations are unlikely to trigger. Avalanche danger remains low (Danger Level 1).
