Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs above approximately 2400 m. In the afternoon the likelihood of avalanches being released will increase gradually in particular along the border with Switzerland.

The strong wind will transport the new snow. Over a wide area sometimes large wind slabs will form. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in particular on north to southeast to southwest facing aspects above approximately 2500 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions and at transitions into gullies and bowls,, but in isolated cases also at a distance from ridgelines.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2200 m. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In particular in shady places that are protected from the wind, high altitudes: Towards its surface, the snowpack is soft; its surface consists of loosely bonded snow. Large-grained weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in areas where the snow cover is rather shallow. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency
