Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger.

Today the wind was moderate to strong in particular along the border with Switzerland and along the border with France. As a consequence of wind from northwesterly directions, wind slabs formed. They are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines. The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases above approximately 2300 m. As a consequence of solar radiation moist avalanches are possible in the afternoon, but they will be mostly small, in particular on very steep sunny slopes, caution is to be exercised in particular at the base of rock walls.

Snowpack Structure

Little snow fell during the night. The northwesterly wind has transported some snow. The snowpack is weak in some cases, in particular on shady slopes. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a crust formed on the surface on Monday, in particular on sunny slopes. Over a wide area 30 to 40 cm of snow fell on Sunday above approximately 1500 m.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist.
