Steer around stiffer wind-packed snow and seek out slopes with softer surfaces to avoid recently formed slabs. Steep northerly- and easterly-facing slopes are the most suspect, where an avalanche in motion might break deeply on buried weak layers. Wind-sheltered slopes are a safer bet to avoid the problem.
