Avalanche Summary

Although winds may not be strong on Thursday, significant drifting occurred due to westerly winds on Tuesday and Wednesday. This means you could trigger avalanches where previous winds drifted snow onto north through east-facing slopes. Any avalanche has the potential to gouge down to deeper layers and break at the ground, resulting in a rough ride.

This recent large avalanche shows that there are places with thick slabs of drifted snow over very weak layers near the ground. These conditions seem to be more pronounced around Vail Pass.
