Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche large enough to bury you where you find slabs of cohesive snow resting on a weaker layer below. You may not receive any warning signs such as cracking or audible collapsing  before a slope avalanches. Treat all steep slopes as suspect. Avoid wind-loaded areas, such as slopes beneath cornices or smooth pillowed features, where you can most easily  trigger an avalanche. Lower-elevation southerly slopes and wind-sheltered areas provide safer options.
