Highlights

The snowpack structure is poor. At the mid and upper elevations, backcountry travelers could trigger large persistent slabs which lie upon weak, faceted snow. While the likelihood of triggering these slides continues to decrease, the consequences remain high. Skiers and riders might still be able to trigger isolated pockets of shallower slab at the lower elevations. There, avoid terrain traps where even small slides can pile up large amounts of debris.

    At the mid and upper elevations, backcountry travelers could trigger dense slabs with crown depths of two to five feet in areas where thick deposits of wind-drifted snow have built up in avalanche starting zones. Shallow weak-spots in these slabs are the most likely trigger points. These slabs may also become more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects in the afternoon as the day warms. Do not let previous tracks lull you into a false sense of security as they are not an indication of stability. At the lower elevations, isolated pockets of slab could have crown depths up to two feet deep.

Avalanche Discussion

A Canadian cold front will move south across Montana overnight. On Sunday this front will move into Northetn Wyoming, spread south and spill over the Continental Divide. Some light snowfall is possible at the higher elevations along and near the divide. Winds will veer to the north and bring cooler temperatures to the region. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Teton area and CONSIDERABLE in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas on Sunday. At the mid and upper elevations large slab avalanches two to four feet in depth could be human triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche paths that did not slide during the most recent storm cycle. Previous tracks on a suspect slope should not be considered to be a sign of stability.
