Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche in wind-drifted snow at upper elevations. You are most likely to encounter these dangerous wind drifts on steep slopes just below ridgelines, around rock outcrops, or in gullies or couloirs. You can find safer travel options by seeking out wind-sheltered terrain where the snow is soft, most likely below treeline.
