Avalanche Summary

No recent avalanches have been reported, but observations are limited at this time of year.

Please consider posting a MIN if you are heading out in the backcountry!

Snowpack Summary

Recent snowfall amounts range from 5 to 15 cm, with an additional 5 to 10 cm expected on Friday. Westerly winds are redistributing new snow into deeper deposits on leeward slopes at higher elevations.

In many areas, especially at treeline and below, the new snow now overlies a layer of surface hoar.

The mid and lower snowpack includes various crust layers from November.

Snow depths at treeline vary from about 40–100 cm and decrease dramatically at lower elevations.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for fresh storm slabs building throughout the day.
  • Be careful as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Be cautious of buried obstacles, especially below treeline.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
