Regions: Olympics.

At higher elevations that hold enough snow to avalanche, dangerous avalanche conditions will continue into Wednesday due to recent snow and wind. Due to early season conditions, small avalanches have a greater potential for injury due to exposed rocks and vegetation.

Discussion

Low snow conditions continue to limit the overall avalanche hazard in the Olympics. A strong storm on Tuesday brought plenty of water and rain, but unfortunately little in the way of new snow below treeline due to near or above freezing temperatures. Near treeline, we are probably approaching the snow depth threshold for avalanches on Wednesday. Above treeline, there is likely enough snow on the ground to present an avalanche hazard.

Forecast schedule

For the 2018-19 winter season, avalanche hazard ratings will be issued for the Olympics Friday through Sunday and during holidays.

On days that the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, No Rating will be applied. We will continue to provide general snowpack and weather summaries for the Hurricane Ridge area even when No Rating is issued.
