Southeasterly winds blew with speeds capable of transporting snow for over 12 hours during the last steady trickle of snow, peaking on 2/10 in the morning. There could still be soft, lingering wind slabs in upper-elevation terrain where winds were most active. Snow continued to fall following this period--expect surface clues of wind slabs to be disguised by non-drifted snow.
This problem most likely exists in mid to upper elevation terrain along the sides of steep cross-loaded gullies or convex rolls. You may not find obvious signs of wind loading if approaching a slope from a wind-scoured ridge, but that doesn't mean you couldn't find this problem mid-slope.
If you trigger a wind slab, it is likely to be a bit of a wind slab/dry loose combo avalanche, where soft and shallow wind slabs trigger and entrain dry loose snow on the same slopes. Pay particular attention on large faces and cross-loaded gullies directly below ridgelines today. Pole probing, hand pits, and small slope tests are all useful tools for this problem.
DRY LOOSE:
In steep terrain above 35 degrees where new snow has fallen over firm surfaces, you will be likely to trigger dry loose sluffs. While these sluffs are most likely to be small (D1-1.5), even a small unexpected sluff in a committing terrain feature could have high consequences and knock you off your feet and carry you somewhere you do not want to wind up.
This 02/12 wind slab avalanche on Marmot was an intentional ski cut and propagated down the gully wall, entraining loose snow.
