Mount Shasta

Low avalanche danger prevails throughout the backcountry. Extreme high alpine terrain may harbor isolated wind slabs. Firm, slide-for-life conditions exist. Be alert for red flags of avalanche danger, and anticipate dynamic travel conditions. General caution is advised.   

Across the far reaches of the forecast zone, avalanche danger remains low, but caution is still advised. Northeasterly winds have battered Mount Shasta’s upper slopes for days, creating potential wind drifts in isolated, extreme terrain. In the alpine, watch for cracking underfoot in wind-stiffened snow and manage suspected wind-loaded areas carefully. Always stay mindful of your surroundings.

Slide-for-life conditions are present and hold heightened consequence on exposed terrain or technical routes. Self-arrest skills are essential. Shady aspects will be firm and bulletproof, while sunny slopes may soften at certain elevations. Do yourself a favor and pack the sharps (ice axe and boot/ski crampons) to increase your safety and success margin. A small mishap on a 14,000-foot volcano can have serious consequences.

This is a great time to practice rescue skills, tune up your boards/machines, and scout desirable terrain, so that when winter does return— you're dialed!
