Highlights

It will be possible to trigger avalanches 1-3 feet deep in very steep terrain. This is not a widespread problem, but requires conservative terrain choices, as the consequences of involvement in an avalanche are high today. Avalanches are unlikely below 9,000, where the avalanche danger is low.

    Hard slabs 1-3 feet thick that sit over weak snow remain a lingering issue today. It has been just over 2 weeks since the last human triggered avalanche was reported on Togwotee which resulted in a fatality. While the likelihood of triggering an avalanche is trending towards the low end of the scale, the consequences remain high. Because of this low likelihood/high consequence combo, it remains important to be vigilant when moving through avalanche terrain. Travel one at a time across steep slopes, use islands of safety when stopping and communicate plans within your group throughout the day.

Avalanche Discussion

The persistent slab problem is a slowly changing issue on Togwotee. The chances of impacting a weak layer continue to go down over time. It is possible to travel many miles over the course of a day and not encounter this problem. This avalanche problem is slowly moving towards being dormant, but it is not there yet.  A lack of recent reported activity helps to support the move towards dormancy. However, snowpit tests continue to show propagation potential in these deeper weak layers. Developing and practicing good travel habits is important during these quiet periods, as those habits will become more crucial during periods of heightened avalanche activity.
