Highlights

Snowfall and moderate winds should continue to load buried weak layers throughout the day. Large natural avalanches on weak layers 1-2' deep are possible, and human triggered avalanches are likely. Strong winds overnight have also formed wind slabs 1'+ deep at upper elevations that will be easy for a person to trigger. We recommend a cautious approach to avalanche terrain while the snowpack adjusts to the new load.

    Last night's storm brought roughly 4-6" of new snow to Seward and Lost Lake with higher totals near the coast. This additional load combined with wind loading from very strong east winds and another 4-6" of snow expected today will make large natural avalanches 1 to 2' deep on persistent weak layers possible. In the past week, we have seen many human triggered avalanches in the Seattle Creek area in Turangain Pass, and we expect similar conditions to exist in the Seward and Lost Lake forecast area. 

    Andrew and Daniel rode from Snug Harbor towards Lost Lake yesterday and found widespread buried surface hoar about 4-8" deep. As this layer is buried more deeply, the likelihood of avalanches increases. You can use test slopes, hand pits, and snow pits to check whether the buried weak layers exist in the area you are traveling and whether they are reactive to the weight of a skier or rider.

    With persistent weak layers, avoid the temptation to try and outsmart the problem. If you are seeing any signs of unstable weak layers, we recommend taking a conservative approach and sticking to low angle terrain to avoid this issue. Avalanches releasing on lower angle slopes than normal and remote triggering is common, where you can trigger an avalanche from low angle terrain onto adjacent steeper slopes.

    Cornices could fail naturally today as the added snow and wind cause them to grow larger. Keep an extra safe margin if you are traveling along ridgelines and try to avoid being underneath cornices that are being wind loaded.

    Glide avalanches are still a concern across the forecast area. Try to avoid spending time underneath glide cracks to limit your exposure to this unpredictable hazard.

    Very strong winds averaging 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 85 mph overnight have formed widespread wind slabs at upper elevations. These could be up to 1-2' deep and are likely to be triggered by a person today. With the strength of the winds, snow can be transported further downslope than normal, so wind slabs can exist in uncommon locations. Keep an eye out for shooting cracks, hollow feeling pillows of snow, or avalanches on small test slopes to identify where wind slabs are located.
