Weather Forecast

A surface ridge of high pressure will build back over Rogers Pass today. Expect cooling temperatures, sunny with cloudy periods and gusty wind. As the High-Pressure system solidifies over us tonight, we could start to see a temperature inversion, valley fog, and decreasing wind. The long term forecast is for cooler temperatures, and no precip.

Snowpack Summary

Strong winds, and a little bit of new snow overnight has created wind slabs in exposed terrain features in the Alpine and at Tree Line. The new snow sits on a variety of surfaces, including but not limited to a thin sun crust on steep S/SW asp, and SH. The Jan 10 layer is down 40-60cm in sheltered terrain at tree-line and below.

Avalanche Summary

A few size 1 wind slabs were reported yesterday in multiple MIN reports from Connaught CK. 2 loose dry avalanches were observed in the HWY corridor yesterday to size 1.5. 1 guiding operation and 1 ACMG course were in the Asulkan and Connaught drainages; both reported no new avalanches observed in the info ex.

Wind Slabs

Moderate wind yesterday + strong to extreme winds last night, have built wind slabs in immediate alpine and tree-line lee features. This new layer is sitting on a variety of surfaces from isolated SH and sun crusts to low-density settling storm snow.

  • Be careful with wind loaded pockets, especially near ridge crests and roll-overs.
  • Avoid terrain traps, such as gullies, where the consequences of a small avalanche could be serious.
