Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.

The fresh snow and in particular the wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in all aspects and above the tree line. This applies in particular on wind-loaded slopes. Slab avalanches and loose snow avalanches are the main danger. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular at elevated altitudes. Especially on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes the avalanches can be released in deep layers of the snowpack and reach large size in some cases. The danger of natural avalanches will decrease.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes large wind slabs of the last few days are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. The wind slabs are lying on unfavourable layers in all aspects. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. Low and intermediate altitudes, south, southeast and southwest facing slopes: The weather conditions fostered a gradual strengthening of the snowpack.
