Highlights

The potential continues for backcountry riders or skiers to trigger slab avalanches in very steep wind loaded terrain in active avalanche starting zones. The triggering of such a slab is most likely to occur in and around cliff areas above 9000 feet. Avalanches at lower elevations remain unlikely due to shallow snow depths. Backcountry travelers are urged to evaluate the snowpack and the terrain carefully as even small slides can have dire consequences.

    Slabs formed by strong winds during recent snowfall lie upon crusts and faceted snow that was buried on December 5th. This weak layer is widespread at the upper elevations and reaches down to an elevation of 8500 feet on west to east aspects. Although these slabs have become less reactive, they could still be human triggered in very steep terrain with average slab depths of one to two feet.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Light snow overnight could bring one to three inches of snow by morning, particularly to the northern portions of the forecast area. Monday looks to be mostly clear with mountain temperatures rising into the mid-twenties. West winds are to have averages over 20 miles per hour. The avalanche danger will continue to be moderate in all the forecasts areas above 8500 feet where a potential continues to trigger slab avalanches. These slabs will present as wind slabs and are mostly likely to be triggered in very steep terrain such as cliff bands that are near ridge crests and summits and are particularly prone to wind loading. Slab depths of one to three feet are possible. Below 8500 feet the avalanche danger is Low and avalanches are unlikely.
