Avalanche Activity

The strong wind has transported the new snow significantly. Wind slabs represent the main danger.

A lot of snow fell in the last two days over a wide area. As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind, wind slabs formed in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. The fresh wind slabs can be released easily or naturally. In particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and on wind-loaded slopes large avalanches are possible. Snow sport activities outside marked and open pistes call for experience and great restraint.

Snowpack Structure

The large quantity of fresh snow and the wind slabs formed by the strong wind are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. The strong wind has transported the new snow significantly. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. Avalanches can in some places be released in deep layers in particular on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes.
