The cold, dry snow has been drifted into firm slabs. Very wide and surprising persistent slabs remain possible even at lower elevations if you find that combination of slab over facets. You can trigger thin, fresh wind slab avalanches on open, exposed slopes up high and older, larger, thick ones at all elevations. Seek out sheltered, well-supported terrain and minimize your exposure to large open slopes where avalanches can start.
